Powers and Duties of Gilberdyke Parish Council

Powers and Duties of Gilberdyke Parish Council

Powers

A power is optional, to be used or not, subject to the proper decision-making process of the council.

The statutory powers granted by Parliament give parish councils the discretionary choice to take action.

Like all powers given to public bodies, the powers of parish councils are defined in detail in legislation. These may include the requirement to obtain the consent of another body or authority.

Councils are also subject to the provisions of the general law.

Duties

A duty is a mandatory activity that must be carried out.

Councils are required by law to perform all of their duties, without exception.

The table below describes the majority of the powers and duties for parish councils, along with details of the relevant Acts of Parliament or regulations. Further information can be obtained from the Clerk.
